The Proper Attire

When you blaze the open trail on a dirt bike, you face certain hazards. Low-hanging branches could scrape your skin, kicked-up debris could hit your face, the beating sun could cause sunburns, and so on. Wearing the proper clothing helps protect you from the obstacles on the trail. It also helps protect you in the event that you crash. In fact, the mantra of many riders is "dress for the crash, not the ride". If you dress as if you expect to crash, you'll be protected in the event that you do.

First, you'll need to protect your head. You must do more than simply wear a helmet - you need a well-fitting helmet. Make sure it's the right size and is comfortable. Replace yours every five years (that's when the binding starts falling apart).

Next, you'll need to shield your eyes. As you ride your dirt bike, many things could get stuck in your eyes (from dust to debris). Plus, there's the bright glare of the sun. A pair of goggles (preferably with UV ray protection) will be just fine.

You'll also want to guard your skin. It may seem smart to go for short-length clothing on hot days, but that's actually the opposite of what you want to do! Full-length clothing protects your skin from the unrelenting sun rays, as well as guard against scrapes. Look for lightweight and breathable material so that you can stay comfortable on hot days.

Finally, you'll need to protect your hands. Rain or sweat makes hands slippery. Plummeting temperatures make hands shiver. These make it hard to manipulate the controls on your dirt bike and stay in control. Riding gloves help block out the weather so you can maintain easy grip.

Maintain Focus

Riding a dirt bike is an engaging activity. It's athletic at times with how you maneuver the bike across difficult terrain. It's also mental at times with how you constantly scope out your surroundings and make sure you can handle the upcoming terrain. To do both of these well, you need to maintain proper focus. Keeping your mind sharp helps you keep your body safe.

It should go without saying, but never ride a dirt bike while under the influence of any substances. If you are on prescription medications, make sure they don't hurt your focus. Bring along plenty of water so you can stay hydrated. Eat plenty of food so that your blood sugar doesn't dip. Set yourself up to stay engaged (and stay safe) while you cruise around the woods.

Limit Risks

There are always going to be risks to riding a dirt bike, but you can certainly limit them. Never go out in bad weather conditions (such as rain) or ride at night. These situations impair your visibility as well as the road and your dirt bike's ability to maintain traction. Stay off of paved roads if you can as well. Your dirt bike isn't made for that terrain, so it doesn't have the right safety or lighting features. Stay on the designated trail and you can return home safe and sound.
